I have recently learned to release the idea that all of the lego kits that we buy for our two sons need to “stay together” because of one word ——-CREATIVITY! Here is the thing….  I have noticed that when they first get the kits , they follow the directions TO THE T- from the big kits to the small kits and create whatever is “ON THE BOX.” right?  It is great!  I mean they are learning so many skills from the directions from problem solving to symmetry  etc. However, for a while I was finding that I was truly getting upset —- I know right —- UPSET when they would construct these massive kits and loose pieces within days ……sometimes within hours. Until recently when I discovered something so unique to Just LEGOS with help from the LEGO movie!...

TODAY- Our perspective is our reality.

Here is what I have really found to be my “FOCUS” lately.  Quite Simply ……. TODAY. This picture was from a dear friends home. When I saw it I asked him, “so what is the deal with the sign?” He said – “Simply TODAY.” WHAT DO YOU MEAN? I find myself getting caught up in so much of the strategy of living life for tomorrow – next week – or even when I retire. YES REALLY like that is even an option now. Well, I have found myself, as well as the majority of people I am subjected to overlooking TODAY. So now I have all kinds of people that change my perspective daily. I mean I have friends that are survivors of illness or have so many things in their life that just make me SO frustrated with...

How to use Technology to Create a Real Community (Featured in the May 2014 Issue of The International Percussive Arts Journal) So many people have found a link between technology and reaching larger groups of people with their topic of choice. People Blog, Tweet, Instagram, and create massive groups on Facebook to name a few. All of these “technological tools” provide an instant audience. People seem to enjoy having an audience and we can admit first and foremost some deserve one and others do not. Most importantly, we are all finding ways to use these resources to create community. However, we must also provide a purpose for the type of community and digital environment we want to create. What is your purpose for using technology? Creating an online community is something I am still learning and bringing into a...

Confession # 1 :  My life,  especially the past 4 years,  has taught me a great deal about where I should put my Focus and what truly matters. The Arts are very dear to my heart because they provide expression which leads to passion.  My family is even more dear to me because they are my gravity. And so …… I am so very thankful for many things.  Too many to list really !  I mean – I should list them daily, but instead  I would like to take a moment to highlight one of the main ingredients that I feel guides our lives in so many ways. Purpose. It is something so valuable and influences everything from how we raise our children, the careers we pursue, and even just simply finding that source that wakes us up in...

Fire up a different kind of band through Multicultural Music !

I have been very blessed with some truly unique experiences in the arts.  Being hungry – more like starving on tour with Drum Corps, Confused  by and loving the WGI activity , Practicing a triangle part for 12 hours for Orchestra, and 6 Hours of rehearsal playing an African Drum until my hands bleed!  Most of these  – NO all of these experiences have completely shaped the person that I am today and my perspective on creativity.  This is why I get extremely excited to tell people about creativity! Multicultural Music and Arts.  Multiculturalism and diversity have become BUZZ words in all things over the past 7-10 years.  But what do they mean? What is the PURPOSE? The Blurry-ness I run into a lot of misconceptions about what “world music” is and how to define “multicultural music and arts.”...

Hug a Teacher

This was a picture that I saved from the Sandy Hook Elementary School aftermath which seems so many months and so many changed perspectives ago…..ya know. Now the fad on the social media network seems to have gone towards pointing out or arguing against how overpaid teachers are or how state testing strategies are going to have negative outcomes.  Can we make it simple again?  My mother told me something when we had our very first child —she said;“son, children do not raise themselves.” The truth is we are all raising children together.  Soon enough another school year will start up and people all across the country will be dropping their children off for 7-10 hours a day for 5 days a week. Where is our focus? What are we complaining about? What are we doing to help?...
